For The Love of Fan Tuan

Digital artwork for a group show, “Have a Nice Day” at Chunky Things in Chinatown, Los Angeles. The show was meant to highlight our favorite places that feel like home or bring us comfort that makes us keep going back. Artist statement on my piece for the show:

“Liu Mama Fan Tuan (劉媽媽飯糰) is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Taipei, Taiwan to get a huge rice roll filled with flossy, crunchy, pickled, and tasty things. The warm and friendly owners are of Hakka descent (客家人) just like my parents, so they take their pickled greens seriously and press them with stones everyday. My mom wrapped fan tuans for me growing up, and always said that pickled greens are the key ingredients. While Taiwanese breakfast is an elusive meal to find in the US, it's the meal I seek most when I visit Taiwan. “
